Removals from Croydon to Italy

Italy is the route with a mountain range in the middle of it. In most respects it runs like the French route. Two things set it apart: a mountain range in the way, and destination addresses that more often than anywhere else simply cannot be reached by a large vehicle.

Tuscany and Umbria are restoration buyers. Milan is a work move and behaves like a city relocation anywhere.

Who moves this route from Croydon

  • Restoration buyers in Tuscany, Umbria and Le Marche, often moving into a house still being worked on.
  • Work relocations to Milan and Turin, with a fixed start date and a lift built decades ago.
  • Lake Como, Garda and Maggiore second homes — part-loads in, occasional clearances out.

The route out of the borough

M25 south side, round to the M20 and the shuttle from Folkestone. From Calais the run turns east and south across France: the A26 towards Reims, then the A31 and A39 down past Beaune towards the Alpine approaches.

Two ways through the mountains. Mont Blanc from Chamonix drops into the Aosta valley and on to Turin and Milan; Fréjus is the alternative and is often more reliable in winter. From Milan the A1 runs the length of the country through Bologna and Florence to Rome.

Where we deliver

Milan, the lakes and Lombardy Small lifts and courtyards; lake roads that narrow sharply in the last mile.
Piedmont and Turin The first region past the tunnels — good motorway access, older city buildings.
Tuscany Florence, Siena and the Val d'Orcia. Unmade strade bianche and gateways built for a cart.
Umbria and Le Marche Hill towns with stepped access and centres closed to vehicles much of the day.
Rome and Lazio ZTL restricted zones deciding when a vehicle may be in the centre at all.

Customs and paperwork

Italian formalities run on a codice fiscale and a declaration of transfer of residence. The system is administratively slower than the French one and rewards a complete file before arrival rather than one assembled while goods wait.

The file, and who builds it

DocumentObtained byWhat it is
Detailed inventory (valued, in Italian) Us Translated as standard, with electrical items listed individually.
Codice fiscale You The Italian tax code — needed for the declaration and most things on arrival.
Proof of Italian residence or property You Deeds, a registered lease, or residence registration at the comune.
Passport and status documents You Copies for the file, including whatever evidences your right to reside.
Declaration of transfer of residence Us Prepared with our Italian agent, lodged against the inventory.
Export declaration Us Raised on the UK side before the vehicle reaches Folkestone.

Everything marked You is yours to obtain, and those are the items that hold loads up — start them early. Everything marked Us we prepare and lodge against the inventory written at your property.

What comes up after the move

Access is what defines the Italian route. The old centres of Tuscany and Umbria run to camera-enforced zones, stepped lanes and archways cut for a cart, and it is entirely normal for the final stretch into a house to be walked by the crew in relays. Anyone who has emptied a Purley house built into a chalk slope will know the shape of that day: perfectly doable, and it has to be staffed for.

The restoration house is the second particularity. If the house has no power, no lift and a floor going down that week, tell us. Delivering into local storage and moving in properly afterwards is frequently the cheaper and calmer option.

Third, Italian paperwork rewards patience. The file is assembled before departure; where a document is slow we would rather hold the load here than have it standing at an Italian port.

Questions on this route

  1. 01

    Which Alpine tunnel?

Usually Mont Blanc for Turin and Milan, Fréjus where conditions make it better. The driver decides on the day; neither changes your price.

  2. 02

Can you deliver to a hill town with no vehicle access?

Yes, by shuttling and carrying the last stretch. It needs seeing and it needs bodies, so it belongs in the survey rather than in a phone call.

  3. 03

    What is a ZTL?

A camera-enforced restricted zone in a historic centre, open only at certain hours or by permit. It affects when we can be at your door.

  4. 04

Should we be there when goods arrive?

Much better if you or someone acting for you is. Every so often Italian clearance asks something that only the owner of the goods can settle.

  5. 05

    Can you move a piano?

Usually, with the right crew and sometimes an exterior lift. Raise it at survey rather than adding it to a general inventory.

  6. 06

    Are part-loads possible?

Yes, and for a lake or second home generally right: shared vehicle, lower cost, departure when the route fills.
